Best Strategy Games of Recent Years – TOP 10

10-) Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition

Release Date: November 14, 2019
Only a game like Age of Empires 2 can manage to rank in the top 10 strategy games even 20 years after its debut. But the legendary RTS still convincing, and with the release of the Definitive Edition, the classic also makes a graphical leap into the modern era. The medieval struggle for supremacy has never been greater.

Of course, we can say that the game is based on a 20-year-old version. However, Definitive Edition benefits from not altering the actual gameplay. The mix of base construction, research, and military conflicts worked perfectly then and now. In addition, Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition’s fidelity to the original is handsome enough to draw new players to its timeless concept, while appealing to veterans who can sink into nostalgia.

9-) Fantasy General 2

Release Date: September 5, 2019
No one could have predicted that Fantasy General 2 would be this good! The sequel to a turn-based strategy game from 1996 – didn’t it make waves even then? In fact, Fantasy General has proven to be a boon for struggling hex tacticians. As a young barbarian clan leader, we lead our forces and experience the best tactics in missions against the mighty empire.

#8 on Top 10 Strategy Games List : Phoenix Point

Release Date: December 3, 2020
At Phoenix Point you can feel where the developers’ roots lie in every corner. X-COM inventor Julian Gollop was responsible here, giving an immensely valuable, albeit purely intellectual, successor to one of the forefathers of turn-based strategy. Oddly enough, Phoenix Point builds so heavily on actual XCOM new releases that Gollop isn’t involved at all, but doesn’t make the concept worse, but deepens much of the mechanics established in XCOM 2.

7-) Total War: Three Kingdoms

Release Date: May 23, 2019
For some, Three Kingdoms is the best Total War in years. For others, there is almost no progress. Which camp you enter depends on what matters most to you about Total War. Wars? Here the Three Kingdoms are weakened at a high level. It has far less variety or innovation than Total War: Warhammer 2, though it continues to offer spectacular and strategic mass battles unique to the series.

But if the campaign map is most important to you, Total War: Three Kingdoms will have you covered like never before! This is where the game takes groundbreaking steps for the series. First of all, diplomacy is more complex and important than ever before. Economy and character management offer nice depth along with new ideas like your own espionage system. If you love to manage your empire and cities, you’ve come to the right place!

6-) Age of Empires 4

Release Date: October 28, 2021
For many fans of classic real-time strategy, Age of Empires 4 was the last hope. If this game doesn’t kickstart the genre, then no one will. So the expectation was huge. In order to meet these demands, the new development studio relied on proven technology: they turned to the past without completely losing sight of the future. That’s why Age of Empires 4 feels like Age of Empires 2 in the past. It’s back to the Middle Ages and the RTS is also very reminiscent of its incredibly successful grandfather in terms of gameplay.

At the same time, Age of Empires 4 is more than a graphic version of a classic. In particular, the much more diverse breeds contribute to the AoE 4’s ability to stand out from its larger role model. Whether you’re at war with the Russians, the British or the Mongols, it makes a big difference in every battle. All in all, Age of Empires 4 is a more well thought out game than any RTS in a long time. It strikes the right balance and can indeed keep the breed alive for many years to come.

5-) Oxygen Not Included

Release Date: July 30, 2019
The quality of Oxygen Not Included probably no longer surprises anyone, after indie developers at Klei have shown that they’ve mastered survival with Don’t Starve and deliver excellent stealth gameplay with Mark of the Ninja. Developers simply understand their craft and this is also reflected in this great work by developers in the strategy industry.

Similar to Don’t Starve, the first thing that catches the eye with Oxygen Not Included is the impeccable drawing style and lovable characters. But appearances are deceiving, as ONI is not shallow entertainment for a younger audience. Behind the funny facade lies one of the most complex strategy games of recent years, in which we are responsible for the survival of an underground space colony. We need to perfect all the mechanics for this to work. Making our residents happy, recognizing physical connections and optimizing production chains. If you have nothing to do in Oxygen Not Included, you’ve probably already lost it. Not everything is easy, but the game remains motivated thanks to countless, creative solutions.

#4 on Top 10 Strategy Games List : Gears Tactics

Release Date: 28 April, 2020
Gears Tactics is actually the perfect combination. The franchise is known for its quick cover shooters, but Microsoft realized there was more to it than that. This is how cover shooter became a full-fledged round-robin game of the XCOM brand. So we now dive from cover to cover in third-person, but manage the progress of an entire squad from a safe distance.

Gears Tactics is adept at turning fan expectations into an entirely new genre. The result is an action-packed, beautifully staged tactical game. While the tactics largely do without the strategy part like XCOM or Phoenix Point, it offers the usual exciting story. Even high-quality cutscenes from the Gears series have their place here.

3-) Civilization 6: Gathering Storm

Release Date: February 14, 2019
Climate change is coming to Civilization 6: in the second expansion, Gathering Storm, we must be mindful of how much damage we do to the environment because it could affect the entire planet. If we pump too much exhaust gas into the atmosphere, even the sea level will rise and entire regions will be submerged. There are also more classic disasters such as volcanic eruptions that present their own strategic challenges. Volcanic ash provides more fertile soils, but we also build in hazardous areas.

Gathering Storm also adds a number of other clever improvements. For example, World Congress and Diplomatic Glory are back! The addon offers a successful all-round package and enriches Civ 6 with some interesting nuances.

2-) Desperados 3

Release Date: June 16, 2020
How do you catch a vigilante pistol in the wild west? With a big bear trap named Bianca, of course. In fact, Bianca is just one of the many ways we can get rid of unwanted cowboys in Desperados 3. But what they all have in common is that, ideally, they should be performed as inconspicuously as possible. Inconspicuous doesn’t always mean quiet. As voodoo priestess Isabell, if we let an enemy’s Colt unload on his colleague via mind control, you can hear him from miles away, but fortunately we don’t suspect it.

Like Shadow Tactics, Desperados 3 is adept at offering so many different solutions to each mission that even if you play it a few times, you’ll find new possibilities. Combined with its great Western atmosphere and diverse protagonists, it makes it an invaluable successor to the decades-old Desperados series.

#1 on Top 10 Strategy Games List : Anno 1800

Release Date: April 16, 2019
Anno 1800 welcomes us at the top of the best strategy games list. A return to the roots and at the same time a return to a new era: Anno 1800 combines tradition and innovation like few other games. On the one hand, it revives the magic of its fantastic predecessor, Anno 1404, with a lovingly realized historical scenario, and also brings back many classic series mechanics such as AI opponents, individually simulated items and randomly generated maps.

On the other hand, the Industrial Revolution also introduces entirely new mechanics, such as the railroad we use to transport oil and power our buildings. Anno 1800 is a massive building game: we’ve rarely had so much to explore, build and do in this genre before. A single endless game can easily motivate you for 40 hours or more.

A few quirks like the harsh and monotonous combat and mediocre story campaign prevented the game from reaching 90 when it was released, but meanwhile, the developers added a lot of free comfort features and content like the co-op mode.
