How exactly is Max Payne returning?

A remake of Episodes 1 and 2: Max Payne isn’t returning in a full-fledged sequel or reboot. Instead, a remake is planned that includes the first two episodes of the shooter franchise, namely Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. However, the remakes continue without the ten-year-old Max Payne 3 developed by GTA makers Rockstar.

Max Payne remakes use Remedy’s Northlight engine used in Control. The new edition of the two shooter classics should be on par with Remedy’s typical AAA productions. So the Max Payne Remake could be on par with new versions of Resident Evil 2 or Dead Space, for example.

Which developer is making the game?

Remedy develops, Rockstar finances: Remedy studio (Alan Wake, Control) is responsible for the development of Max Payne Remakes, while Rockstar Games finances production and acts as publisher. This closes the circle after the first two Max Payne tracks were created by Remedy and Rockstar was responsible for Max Payne 3 itself.

According to Remedy’s official announcement, the studio approached the developer of GTA and Red Dead Redemption to bring the project to life. However, it may be a few more years before we see and play the reboots of the first two Max Payne games.

When will Max Payne Remake be released?

There’s more to the release: There’s currently no official word on when the Max Payne remake will appear. The project is still in the very early concept stage right now, so Max Payne’s comeback will be in a few years.

Remedy has a lot to do: Remedy itself is also working on the sequel to Alan Wake 2, two AAA games, and Control. The development studio should therefore be quite busy in the coming years.

PC and NextGen: A remake of Max Payne and Max Payne 2 will be released for PC as well as NextGen consoles Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Accordingly, no releases are planned for PS4 or Xbox One.
