Elden Ring Requires 12GB of RAM, But Is 8GB Enough?

As our in-depth review of open world epic shows, Elden Ring is a gaming masterpiece. But before its release, its surprisingly high system requirements caused many gamers to worry, especially about RAM. We check if this is really necessary.

Elden Ring Ram and Graphics Card Requirement?

With a GTX 1060 and an RX 580, Elden Ring’s official minimum requirements call for fairly manageable graphics performance, but the amount of RAM required is unusually high at 12GB.

The vast majority of games, including current open world games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077, and Watch Dogs Legion, do not require more than 8GB of RAM. This raises the question of whether the 12GB RAM mentioned by From Software is suitable for Elden Ring?

How much RAM does Elden Ring use in-game?

To check how much RAM Elden Ring really needs, we looked at it with different memory and hardware constellations. Let’s start with the load at maximum settings with a very high 4K resolution and a large amount of RAM and video memory.

With a Geforce RTX 3080 and Core i9 10900K with 10 GB of VRAM and 16 GB of RAM, we get the following memory reservation in the game itself with these settings:

  • Memory: about 8.5GB
  • Video memory: about 5.5 GB

Exact values may vary depending on scene, equipment and playback time. But this metric shows that Elden Ring is far from being a memory hog. Given the atmospheric but clearly outdated appearance of From Software’s well-known engine, this does not surprise us, despite the transition to the open game world.

Is 8 GB RAM Enough for Elden Ring?

In the next test, we move on to the hardware just below the official minimum specs for all three major components.

  • Ram 8 GB (instead of 12 GB)
  • Graphics card is a Radeon RX 570 with 4GB of VRAM (instead of the RX 580)
  • CPU,quad core Core i3 8100 (six core instead of Core i5 8400)

As the screenshot below shows, these hardware specs are perfectly adequate for your game:
Does Elden Ring work with 8 GB of RAM?
In Full HD, we reach FPS values in the range of 50 to 60 frames per second with high details. Speaking of FPS: More than 60 frames per second isn’t possible by default, so Elden Ring has the FPS cap that other From Software titles are used to.

With the equipment mentioned above, there may be short-term vibrations from time to time. In our experience, even with very fast components, you are not completely exempt from this in Elden Ring.

8 GB of RAM will be enough for you, but we think that 12 GB or more RAM will minimize the occurrence of errors in the game. In this video shared on a youtube channel, it is clearly seen how the game performs with 8 GB of ram;

The game was released on February 25, 2022. With the release of the game, many people started to play the game fondly. It managed to become one of the most popular games by getting a 91% positive score on Steam. It also managed to win the best game of the year award on Steam. You can go to the game’s Steam page here and you can start playing right away.
